Gram

Being temporarily laid up with some mysterious pain in my back, I find myself once again in front of my pc with time on my hands and you know what that means. This story is about my amazing grandmother, my mother’s mom who we called Grammam or just Gram when we were kids. Having already raised one generation of kids – my mom and her two brothers – she found herself raising a next generation family of two of her own late-in-life girls, technically my aunts, and my sister and me in the 40’s in Long Beach, CA. She was an all seeing, all knowing force of nature who could handle anything – ANYTHING – by sheer will power and what she referred to as “elbow grease” – meaning hard work.

Getting Old

How does it feel to get old? I would say it depends on how old you are at the time the question is asked. If you’re 7 it feels really really good, same at 16. Maybe around 30 you start to reconsider this ‘old’ thing a little, but it’s still good then in terms of professional maturity, increased financials and responsibility, so I would say it’s still positive well into the 30’s, maybe 40’s. But somewhere in the 50’s, for me, things started to change.

Buster

I thought I would tell you a little story about Buster this morning. Buster was a rescue dog I got from the Humane Society in Eureka, CA in around 2002. He was a St. Bernard/Lab mix, weighed 125 pounds, and shed like a crop duster in planting season. When I met him they told me his name was Captain Jack but I renamed him Buster

Little League Security Officer

Thinking about my last post regarding my Little League baseball team reminded me of another Little League related experience I won’t forget soon. I shared lots of my Little League experiences with a good friend, Barry Breen, who also spent much of his spare time working with kids. Barry was what I call an ‘operator’, meaning that he always found something special and extra to do and participate in no matter what he was involved in.
